Choosing an Oval Coffee Table for Your Sofa

Measure the usable space in front of your seating before choosing a table. Length determines how far the surface extends along the sofa; depth determines how much space remains for knees and movement.

Allow approximately 18" between the tabletop edge and the front of the sofa as a starting point. Leave additional room along the main route through the living room, and check that recliners or footrests can open.

With an L-shaped sectional, measure the opening between the main seats and the chaise. Mark the proposed tabletop outline on the floor, including its widest point, and check the route around both ends.

A narrow oval coffee table can be useful when a deeper top would crowd the seating. Kennard and Malibu, for example, have depths of approximately 15", giving you a long surface with a relatively slim footprint.

Walnut, Oak and Beech Designs

The tabletop’s wood and the structure beneath it make a noticeable difference to the room.

Soren and Arden use curved solid wood supports that remain visible beneath the oval top. Soren is available in walnut, while Arden has separate walnut and oak versions. Oval Coffee Table Sizes and Heights

The dimensions below describe overall length × maximum depth. Intermediate sizes and available combinations vary by model.

Compare the proposed height with your sofa’s seat cushion and how comfortably you can reach the surface while seated. A lower table may suit low lounge seating, while a taller sofa may work better with a higher option.

Check depth separately from length. Elise and Oasis, for example, offer both 40" × 20" and 40" × 26" tops. The longer dimension stays the same, but the wider version uses another 6" of floor space between the sofa and the opposite side of the seating area.

Should I choose an oval or round coffee table?

An oval table provides more length along a sofa without requiring the same depth as a similarly long round table. A round shape can work well in a more evenly proportioned seating area. Compare our round coffee tables using the actual opening between your seats.

What does “racetrack-shaped” mean?

A racetrack top has straighter long sides connected by rounded ends. It is often grouped with oval coffee tables, although the outline differs from a continuously curved ellipse. Check each model’s overhead photographs to see its exact shape.
