Begin with the number of people who sit down together every day, then consider how often you host additional guests. Allow around 24 inches of usable table edge per person as a starting point, with extra space for wider chairs.

For reference, Sidney’s walnut dining table offers sizes from 50"W × 30"D to 80"W × 40"D. Wilder includes larger options up to 88"W × 40"D. A deeper tabletop leaves more room between opposite place settings for shared dishes, while a narrower one can help preserve space around the table.

Leave Room for Chairs and Movement

Measure from the table edge to the nearest wall, kitchen island or sideboard. Aim for at least 36 inches of clearance around the table, and allow more along frequently used routes behind occupied chairs.

Mark the proposed tabletop outline on the floor before ordering. Pull your existing chairs into position and check nearby cabinet doors, doorways and walkways.

Several models, including Liva and Wilder, have a 30-inch dining height. If you use armchairs, also check the clearance beneath the tabletop and any apron: overall table height alone does not tell you whether the arms will slide underneath.

Compare Table Bases and Bench Options

Sidney’s tapered legs create an open appearance, while Wilder’s block supports give the table a heavier visual presence. Farmhouse and industrial designs offer other arrangements, including trestle bases and metal legs.

Look at where the supports sit in relation to your chairs. A broad base can affect knee room, and corner legs can limit the usable space between seats.

Will the dining table need assembly?

Many models ship with the tabletop and legs or base separated. Assembly requirements vary by design, so check the product information for the components and instructions supplied. Plan how you will bring the tabletop into the room, including any stairs or narrow doorways.

How do I care for a wooden dining table?

Use placemats and coasters, place hot serving dishes on protective trivets and wipe up spills promptly. Clean with a soft cloth and follow the instructions for your table’s finish. Check before applying oils, waxes or household cleaners, as different finishes require different care.
