Find the Right Bookcase for Your Room

Start with the part of the room you want to furnish:

• Tall bookcases: Use wall height for a larger book collection while keeping frequently used items on the shelves you can reach comfortably.

• Narrow bookcases: Add storage beside a desk or along a short section of wall. Check both width and depth before choosing.

• Small bookcases: Keep a smaller selection of books and everyday belongings close to a reading chair or workspace.

• Short bookcases: Leave wall space above for artwork or a mirror. For placement beneath a window, measure the sill and allow room for curtains.

• Corner bookcases: Make use of an otherwise unused corner, checking clearance along both adjoining walls.

Choosing Bookcase Dimensions

Measure the available width, depth and height, including baseboards, nearby outlets and door openings. Marking the footprint on the floor can help you judge how far the shelving will extend into the room.

Measure your books and storage baskets too. Overall furniture dimensions do not tell you the usable space between shelves or inside a cabinet. Beech, Pine and Walnut Bookshelves

The Soho Short and Soho Tall Skinny bookcases use solid beech wood, with simple open shelving suited to minimalist rooms. For an industrial look, the Band Bookcase pairs solid walnut with black powder-coated steel accents. Its width options range from 25″ to 60″, with a depth of 14″ and a height of 79″.

Pine designs offer further choices in layout and storage. The Fargo Bookcase with Cabinet Storage combines pine shelving, a metal frame and a lower enclosed cabinet.

Check the material specification alongside the finish selection. A finish called “Walnut” or “Oak” describes a color option on some products; it does not necessarily identify the wood species. Natural grain and tonal variation also mean that individual pieces will differ.

Open Shelves, Closed Storage or a Room Divider?

Open shelves make books easy to find and leave space for ceramics, photographs and plants. A bookcase with a lower cabinet lets you keep those displays while putting less decorative items out of sight. Allow enough clearance in front for the doors to open comfortably.

For an open-plan room, Portland offers a different arrangement: divided, open-back shelving accessible from both sides. It is available in widths of 52″, 64″, 76″ and 88″, each measuring 13″ deep and 79″ high. Frequently Asked Questions

Which bookcase works well in a small room?

Choose according to the space available in both directions. A narrow, tall bookcase can use a small footprint, while a short design leaves more wall space above. Soho Tall Skinny, for example, has a 14.9″ × 14.9″ footprint and comes in several heights.

Are the shelves adjustable?

Shelf arrangements vary by model. A choice between five, six or seven shelves describes different configurations and does not automatically mean the shelves can be repositioned. Check the individual product details or ask us about the spacing you need.

Do the bookcases require assembly?

Many models require assembly and include instructions. Check the selected product for its assembly requirements and follow its installation and wall-securing guidance.

Can I use a bookcase for large books or office files?

Check the usable shelf depth, opening height and load capacity for the specific model. Send us the dimensions of your books or files if you need help confirming a suitable configuration.
