Choosing a dining table starts with the people who use it, the chairs around it and the space available when everyone is seated. Tomruque’s solid wood dining tables include round, rectangular, square and oval designs, with options for compact kitchen corners, separate dining rooms and larger shared spaces.

Our wooden dining tables are handcrafted in Turkey and made to order. Choose from designs in walnut, oak, pine and beech, alongside selected live-edge and wood-and-resin tables. Many models offer several sizes, with custom dimensions and finishes available on request.

Choose a Shape That Works with Your Room

Round dining tables keep everyone facing one another and work well in square dining areas or breakfast corners. Check the diameter with chairs pulled out, especially if the table sits near a kitchen island or doorway.

Rectangular dining tables make good use of longer rooms. They provide space along both sides for chairs or a bench, while wider tops leave more room between place settings for shared dishes.

Square dining tables suit layouts with similar amounts of space in both directions. Smaller versions can create a dining spot for two, while larger sizes need enough room around all four sides.

Oval dining tables offer an elongated surface with curved ends. Consider an oval when a rectangular table’s corners would project into the route between your dining area and the rest of the room.

Look Below the Tabletop

The base affects where you can place chairs and how comfortably people can sit.

Our pedestal dining tables include round designs such as Alya, Aven and Dorel, together with larger double-pedestal models. A central support removes corner legs, but its width and shape still affect foot space and how far chairs can tuck in.

With four-leg tables, measure the clear distance between the legs rather than relying on the tabletop width alone. For chairs with arms, also check the clearance beneath the top and any apron or support rail. Overall table height does not tell you whether an armchair will slide underneath.

Find the Right Dining Table Size

Plan for the number of people you seat every day, then consider how often you need additional places.

Allow around 24" of table edge per person as a starting point for comfortable dining. Wider chairs, armrests and larger place settings may need more space. A seating label such as “six-person table” is useful only when the chair sizes and base position also work.

Aim for approximately 36" between the tabletop edge and the nearest wall or furniture, with more space along busy walkways. Measure to the front of a sideboard or cabinet, not just to the wall behind it.

For example, a 72" W × 40" D table with 36" clearance on every side needs a clear planning area of approximately 144" × 112". This is a starting layout, so check door swings, cabinets and the space needed behind occupied chairs.

Mark the proposed tabletop outline on the floor with removable tape, then position your chairs around it. This helps you judge everyday access more accurately than measuring an empty room.

Choose Your Wood and Finish

A walnut dining table brings deeper brown tones and expressive grain to the room. Oak is worth comparing if you prefer a lighter natural appearance with a more pronounced grain texture. Pine adds knots and rustic character, while beech offers a finer, more even texture.

Look at the wood species and finish together. A colour name describes the appearance of a finish; it does not necessarily identify the timber beneath it. The same wood can look different under a natural, stained or painted finish.
